Singapore Accelerates AI Ambitions Through Global Partnerships, NVIDIA Research Lab, and OpenAI Investment

Singapore is strengthening its position as a global artificial intelligence (AI) hub through a series of strategic partnerships, research initiatives, and industry collaborations aimed at accelerating the real-world deployment of AI technologies.

Speaking at ATxSummit 2026, Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, unveiled multiple initiatives designed to move the nation beyond AI experimentation and toward large-scale implementation, commercialization, and governance of AI systems.

The announcement aligns with recommendations from the Economic Strategy Review Committee, which identified AI as a key driver of Singapore’s future competitiveness. The city-state is now positioning itself as a leading destination for the development, testing, and deployment of AI solutions capable of addressing real-world challenges across industries.

Singapore Launches Physical AI Testbed at Punggol Digital District

A major highlight of the initiative is the creation of Singapore’s first large-scale public testbed for Physical AI, located at the Punggol Digital District (PDD).

The project is being developed through a partnership between the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), JTC, and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), alongside eight global industry partners.

Scheduled to begin operations in 2026, the facility will provide a real-world environment where companies can develop, test, and validate autonomous robotic systems across multiple operational scenarios.

Early participants include Certis, DHL, Grab, and QuikBot, which will deploy robotic solutions for:

  • Food and parcel delivery
  • Autonomous cleaning services
  • Security patrol operations
  • Human-assisted facility management

The initiative is supported by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) through a regulatory sandbox framework under the Active Mobility Act.

To strengthen Singapore’s capabilities in Embodied AI (EAI), IMDA and the National Robotics Programme (NRP) are also collaborating with FieldAI, Thoughtworks, Slamtec, Unitree, and QuikBot through SIT’s Centre for Intelligent Robotics.

NVIDIA Establishes AI Research Lab in Singapore

Further reinforcing Singapore’s AI ecosystem, NVIDIA announced plans to establish a new AI research laboratory in Singapore, marking the company’s second research facility in the Asia-Pacific region.

The lab will focus on two critical areas shaping the future of AI:

Embodied AI

Research will explore how intelligent systems can better perceive, understand, and interact with the physical world, enabling more advanced robotics and autonomous systems.

Efficient AI Computing

The facility will also develop technologies that improve AI model efficiency, reduce computing costs, optimize infrastructure utilization, and support more sustainable large-scale AI deployment.

The research center will bring together university researchers, government agencies, and industry partners to accelerate innovation and commercialization.

Singapore and OpenAI Deepen Collaboration with More Than S$300 Million Commitment

Singapore is also expanding its collaboration with OpenAI through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the “OpenAI for Singapore” initiative.

The partnership aims to strengthen Singapore’s role as a regional center for applied AI innovation by focusing on:

  • AI research and innovation
  • Workforce and talent development
  • Expanding AI accessibility for businesses and citizens
  • Government adoption of advanced AI technologies

As part of the collaboration, OpenAI has committed more than S$300 million to support the growth of Singapore’s AI ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of advanced AI capabilities across sectors.

Google and Singapore Partner to Advance AI for Public Good

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) also announced a national-level AI partnership with Google.

The collaboration seeks to harness next-generation AI technologies to address societal challenges, strengthen workforce readiness, and build a trusted digital ecosystem.

The partnership reflects Singapore’s broader strategy of working closely with leading technology companies to ensure AI delivers measurable public benefits while supporting economic growth.

Building Trusted and Scalable AI Infrastructure

As AI adoption accelerates, Singapore is simultaneously investing in the foundations needed for responsible and scalable deployment.

Temus, the digital transformation and AI company backed by Temasek, will launch an AI Foundry designed to help organizations scale AI adoption while developing local digital talent.

Supported by Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), the initiative will recruit 50 AI and technology professionals to work on projects in high-trust sectors such as:

  • Financial services
  • Healthcare
  • Precision medicine

Meanwhile, ASTAR Institute for Infocomm Research (ASTAR I²R) has introduced an upgraded version of its AI model, MERaLiON AudioLLM v3.

The new model features enhanced multilingual and paralinguistic understanding capabilities across Southeast Asian languages, enabling more natural and context-aware AI applications.

MERaLiON will be available through cloud platforms, APIs, edge computing environments, and Apple Silicon devices, including Mac and iPad.

Advancing Practical AI Governance

Alongside innovation, Singapore continues to champion a practical and risk-based approach to AI governance.

The government announced updates to its AI Governance Framework for AI Agents, originally introduced at the World Economic Forum in January 2026.

The updated framework now includes real-world case studies and implementation best practices contributed by more than 50 organizations, helping businesses deploy AI agents responsibly and effectively.

In parallel, Google is collaborating with Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA), GovTech Singapore, and IMDA on a new paper exploring the safe deployment of AI agents in public-sector applications.

The guidance is expected to help governments better understand how AI agents can be deployed securely while delivering tangible public value.

Singapore Strengthens Position as a Trusted Global AI Hub

Through investments in research, robotics, AI infrastructure, talent development, and governance, Singapore is rapidly evolving from an AI adopter into a global AI innovation and deployment hub.

The latest initiatives demonstrate the country’s ambition not only to develop cutting-edge AI technologies but also to ensure they can be deployed safely, responsibly, and at scale.

During ATxSummit 2026, Josephine Teo also participated in the ASEAN–US AI Ministerial Roundtable, bringing together ASEAN digital ministers, the ASEAN Secretariat, the United States government, and industry leaders from Amazon and Google.

The meeting marked the launch of the “Road to 50 Years of ASEAN-US Relations” initiative and highlighted the growing importance of inclusive AI adoption across Southeast Asia.

With global technology leaders, government agencies, and research institutions increasingly choosing Singapore as a partner, the country is cementing its reputation as one of the world’s most trusted and dynamic centers for AI innovation.
