Amazon says some qualifying orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, although the company describes approximately one hour as a more typical delivery timeframe after checkout.

The service also has a different pricing structure depending on Prime membership and order value.

Prime members can receive free drone delivery on qualifying orders of $50 or more. Smaller qualifying Prime orders have a $2.99 delivery fee, while customers without a Prime membership pay $4.99 for drone delivery.

The combination of rapid delivery and Amazon’s large product catalogue is intended to make Prime Air useful for customers who need relatively small products quickly.

Drone Delivery Location Is Selected by the Customer

Customers using Prime Air for the first time select an approved delivery location when placing their order. The location can generally be reused for future deliveries or changed when necessary.

The drone performs an additional safety check before releasing the package. It scans the designated delivery area for potential obstacles, including people, pets, and vehicles.

Prime Air is particularly suited to suburban communities where dedicated drone facilities can serve customers within a defined operating area.

Where Is Amazon Prime Air Available?

Amazon currently has 11 Prime Air locations covering 10 metropolitan areas across seven US states.

Its existing network includes a facility in Tolleson, Arizona, near Phoenix, and another in Ruskin, Florida, serving the Tampa region.

Kansas City and Baton Rouge each have one Prime Air location. Michigan has two facilities, located in Hazel Park and Pontiac, which serve the Detroit metropolitan area.

Amazon also operates a site in Papillion, Nebraska, serving the Omaha region.

Texas has four Prime Air facilities, including locations in Richmond near Houston, Richardson near Dallas, San Antonio, and Waco.

Each Prime Air location is designed to serve an area of approximately 175 square miles.
